De studentenresto’s van de UGent hebben sinds de jaren 60 honderdduizenden monden gevoed. Soep, broodjes, spaghetti, ... aan scherpe prijzen op maat van de studentenportemonnee. Het begon bij De Brug, ooit geopend om vooral de arme spoorstudenten te ondersteunen.

Tot vandaag blijft De Brug de populairste resto en de enige waar elke student zich thuis voelt, of toch al eens ging eten.
De Brug werd eind de jaren 80 grondig gerenoveerd tot het restaurant zoals we het tot 2020 kenden. Sinds vorig jaar wordt De Brug verder uitgebreid met 212 extra zitplaatsen. Dankzij deze verbouwing krijgt het restaurant een eigen ingang aan de Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat en aan het UFO.
Omdat De Brug al snel compleet overbelast is, volgt er een tweede studentenresto. Op 21 juni 1971 opent Resto Overpoort officieel de deuren. Met een capaciteit van tien- tot vijftienduizend maaltijden per dag is het een van de grootste studentenrestaurants van Europa.
De locatie van de Resto Overpoort, op de as tussen de boekentoren en Campus Ledeganck en naast de studentenhomes Fabiola en August Vermeylen, ligt voor de hand. Uit cijfers blijkt namelijk dat studentenresto’s die niet vlakbij of op een campus liggen minder studenten aantrekken.
Resto Overpoort werd ontworpen met overcapaciteit om de groei aan studenten op te vangen tot 1990. In 1972 stagneerde die groei echter.
Resto Overpoort sluit de deuren in 2011. Het jaar nadien opent een nieuw restaurant in de Kantienberg.
De bekendste maaltijd van de resto’s moet wel de spaghetti zijn. Jaarlijks worden er bijna vijftigduizend spaghetti’s verkocht in de Brug alleen.
