De waarheid is niet altijd zwart-wit. Iets is niet altijd waar of onwaar. Of is ook die stelling onwaar? De expo 'Wonderkamer van de WAARHEID' van GUM & Plantentuin (Gents Universiteitsmuseum) gaat dieper in op de complexiteit van waarheid. Ze focust niet op fake news of hardnekkige mythes, maar op de menselijke zoektocht naar waarheid en de motieven die daaraan ten grondslag liggen.
Geen betere plaats om het concept ‘waarheid’ in vraag te stellen dan in een museum dat zichzelf positioneert als een forum voor wetenschap, twijfel en kunst. En geen betere tijd om dat te doen, in tijden van desinformatie, fake news en artificiële intelligentie.
Kritische ingesteldheid
Onderzoeker en tentoonstellingsmaker Lyvia Diser vat het doel van de expo samen: “Jongeren weerbaar maken, hen een kritische ingesteldheid meegeven zodat ze de info die hen wordt gepresenteerd van nature in vraag stellen. Zodat ze zich bewust worden van hoe hun eigen denken gevormd wordt door hun plaats, hun positie, in de maatschappij.”
GUM & Plantentuin-directeur en curator Marjan Doom vult aan: “Dat denken vanuit een positie of ‘positionaliteit’ is inderdaad een belangrijke rode draad doorheen de expo. Onze positie in de wereld bepaalt voor een groot deel wat we als waar beschouwen: ons gender, onze sociale afkomst, lichamelijke gesteldheid en etnische herkomst. Dat is niet goed of slecht, maar wel iets om je bewust van te zijn.”
Valkuilen
De expo is dan ook een confrontatie van perspectieven. De blik van wetenschappers uit alle mogelijke disciplines wordt gecombineerd met die van kunstenaars. Want voor elk van hen geldt: zij zoeken naar de waarheid, op hun eigen manier. Marjan Doom: “Iedereen heeft bepaalde opvattingen over waarheid. Die gaan we exploreren en bezoekers confronteren met de valkuilen waarin ze dreigen te stappen bij hun zoektocht naar waarheid en houvast.”
